".................................."
To help with their newspaper report writing, the children have been learning how to punctuate speech correctly...
Magnets!
In Science this week the children have been learning about magnets, and more specifically, how compasses work. They all had a go at making their own compass, by first magnetising a paper clip, then placing it on top of a bottle top in a tray of water. It was very successful for everyone, and all needles pointed north! Yippee!

Newspapers
After practising in different ways with partners, the children have internalised the structure of a newspaper report and some of its key features. They started to plan their own by boxing up...
How do you think Tutankhamun died? What would your newspaper report say?
Egyptian homes
What did ancient Egyptian homes look like?
How do rich and poor homes differ?
What key features do they have and why?
Making homes...
Trip to the museum!
The children had the opportunity to explore and handle some artefacts in a workshop led by a member of the museum staff. These were replicas of items brought back to Bristol in the 19th century by Amelia Edwards, a famous traveller and Egyptologist (she now lays to rest in Henbury).
Following this, the children explored the museum floor, searching for answers to their quiz, learning lots along the way.

Read all about it!
Our new English topic explores newspapers!
The children have been looking at their features...
* Headlines, pictures, captions
* Time connectives - last night, in the morning...
* Newspaper specific vocabulary - one witness reported...
* Information to exaggerate - emphasising one point of view (bias)
What can you find in the newspaper?
Are adult and children newspapers similar?
What is the difference between a tabloid and a broadsheet paper?

Investigating friction
In groups the children compared how a toy car moved on different surfaces.
Each made a prediction, and then had lots of fun testing it out, whilst, recording their results of course.
We will be drawing conclusions next week...

Ancient Egypt
The children have been super eager to start this topic!
We started by looking at the importance of the River Nile to Egyptians today, as well as the Ancient Egyptians.
They also had a go at making shadoofs... a device used to raise water...
Tea time concert
Well done to all those who took part in the tea time concert last night.
I was super impressed by your confidence and talent! Fantastic!

FORCES
Our science topic this half term is: applying forces.
We had a big discussion about forces and found out what the children already knew.
The main objectives were to:
*Understand that forces are pushes, pulls or both (twist)
*Understand that we can't actually see the force itself, but can see how it affects something.
*Explain that forces make objects change speed or direction/stop or change shape.
Please feel free to have a chat with the children about these at home if you would like.
Next we will be carrying out an enquiry to compare how things move on different surfaces.

DT week
The overall aim this week has been to design and make packaging for a type of cereal. This has involved;
exploring different types of packaging and their features
drawing nets of 3D shapes
thinking about target customers
coming up with a design
making
The next step is the evaluation, which the children will be carrying out at home.
