Ewwww!

A super interesting (and smelly) day was had yesterday at Weston Super Mare Sewage Works.
In the morning we took a tour around the site and followed the sewage through the treatment process, before returning to the sea.
It was really pleasing to see that the various bits that are removed from the sewage are put to good use e.g. grit - roads, sludge - fertiliser.

The staff at the centre were very impressed by the children's inquisitive nature, behaviour and knowledge by the end of the day. Some of them even remembered the names of the pieces of equipment!

In the afternoon, a workshop highlighted what was safe to put down the plughole, or flush down the toilet. In groups the children investigated what happened when a 'flushable' wet wipe was flushed compared to a piece of toilet paper.
CONCLUSION: DO NOT FLUSH ANY TYPE OF WET WIPE DOWN THE TOILET!

What a waste!

Group task:
Can you sort the waste pictures into categories? Decide on the heading for each group.
What different types of waste are there?

  • FOOD
  • PACKAGING
  • GARDEN
  • ENERGY
  • WATER

Moving monsters

Parents, you'll be delighted to hear the moving monsters are now complete and are making their way home this afternoon.

Letter writing

We started our new English topic this week, by exploring different types of letters; formal and informal.

After reading the story, Beegu, the children wrote their own informal letters, in the form postcards, ensuring they used familiar, chatty, language, as postcards are written are to people we know.

Shadows

In science this week we've been exploring what shadows are and how they are created. Together we created sundials and used these to tell the time at various points throughout the day.
